Indian tribes are sovereign, even though they are within and essentially a part of the United States. I learned that being sovereign means that Montana’s tribal nations have the rights and abilities to make and enforce their own laws, determine membership citizenship, collect taxes, regulate monies, etc. Having students do independent research on a treaty or agreement between a tribal nation and the US government to see how that affected the tribe’s rights and sovereignty over time. I really liked the idea of taking the class to a Pow Wow, if there was one near you.
